Road accidents decreased by 2 percent, deaths by 1 percent: Police

Hyderabad City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar said that due to the measures taken by the traffic police, overall road accident rate in the city had been decreased by 2 per cent and deaths reduction by 1 per cent compared to previous year. According to the latest survey reports the earlier average speed of 18 kms/ hr in the city was increased to 25 kms/ hr in 2018. 


A total number of 42.82 lakh enforcement cases were booked this year which increased by 27 per cent against 33.18 lakh cases in the previous year and convictions by 52 per cent.  26, 937 (17,982 in 2017) drunken drive cases with 41 per cent increase were booked. Charge sheets filed on 26, 407 and 5, 148 persons were jailed. 1,368 persons driving licenses were suspended or cancelled this year.  


The death rate reduced by 1 per cent. In 2016 a total number of 405 deaths were registered, in 2017-308 deaths, in 2018-298 deaths were registered. In this year an additional of 4.5 lakh vehicles added to the city traffic, but due to the steps taken by the police, the road accidents reduced by 4 per cent and deaths by 3 per cent. 


CP said challans were collected to bring the cultural change in the commuters while driving the vehicles to wear helmets, avoid triple riding, cell phone driving, signal jumping, to wear seat belt and follow the traffic rules for safe journey on the roads.
